Derby Daily Telegraph, Thursday, 16th December 1915:
“Soldier's Sudden Death at Idridgehay
On Monday last a very sudden death took place at the above village. Private J Bates, aged 32, of the Sherwood Foresters, who had been on a weekend furlough to visit his wife and family at Kirk Ireton, was wending his way to Idridgehay Station to rejoin his regiment, when some children who were playing about at the time noticed the soldier fall. As he made no attempt to get up, the children procured assistance, and the poor fellow was picked up and carried into the Swan Inn. Dr Broster, who shortly afterwards was passing through the village, was called in by Mr E Stone, the licensee of the Swan Inn, but the doctor could only pronounce life to be extinct. As a sequel to the above, an inquest was held on the body at the Swan Inn on Wednesday by Mr R W Sale, of Derby (Coroner for the district). Essential Facts of the Disability: He says that in L???? he had to sleep on a wet bed and shortly afterwards he developed a severe cough with expectoration and stabbing pains in his left side. He attended sick parade for a few weeks and then he had crepitations all over both lungs and was subject to fits of coughing with palpatations, which put him back for a few days. He lost flesh and had palpatations which made him feel very weak.
Opinion to Cause of Disability: Unknown
If you consider it caused by active service, climate, or ordinary military service - explain specific conditions: Not so caused
Recommended - Discharge as permanently unfit for war service.

What is His Present Condition: There is a dullness over the whole of the right base and also a small patch over the left apex. There are no abnormal accompaniments at the moment. He has lost a lot of flesh lately and looks very anaemic. He is quite unfit to march.
Opinion of the Medical Board: Permanently unfit for service.
The disiability is not aggravated by intemperance or misconduct.
Is disability permanent: Yes
Recommendation: Discharge as permanently unfit for war service.
